Workplace Etiquette
YOUR WORK AREA
Work area etiquette can apply to both shared spaces and personal workstations. The key is to remember that you are part of a shared environment.
Minimize Your Background Noise
If you like background noise while working, it’s okay…but not everyone can work with noise around them. Don’t subject your coworkers to your music or media. When using audio or video devices, make sure you wear headphones or earbuds, so you won’t disturb others around you.
Clean Your Workspace
Always make sure you clean your area before you leave for the day, especially when using shared spaces. Food crumbs, trash, even your personal belongings should not be left behind. Wipe down the area before you leave. If you have a space of your own, it’s best to declutter regularly, disposing of trash properly, wiping down surfaces, and ensuring your desk is free of unnecessary items.
Inside Voices
When talking on the phone or in person, keep your volume low to avoid disrupting coworkers. Avoid the speakerphone when making a call. Instead, use a headset or pick up the phone directly. If you’re discussing sensitive information, seek a private space to ensure you don’t disrupt others and to maintain confidentiality.
